Armstrong’s playing steadily improved and his traveling and recording activities introduced his music to an increasing number of people. Louis Armstrong made his first Broadway appearance in 1929. His recording of Ain’t Misbehavin’ helped set the stage for the popular acceptance of jazz. By 1932, Armstrong was ready to tour England.

Throughout his life Louis Armstrong said his birthday was the 4th of July, 1900. It seemed fitting, somehow, for America’s greatest jazz patriarch to share a birthday with his native country. Few questioned this date until many years after Armstrong’s death in 1971.
